Student Spotlight: Arav Mathias Is Leading with Kindness

At an age when many teenagers are still discovering their interests, Arav Mathias has already found his purpose: serving others. As a rising junior at Dulles High School and the founder of Gifting Kindness, Arav is proving that age is never a barrier to making a meaningful impact.

As a lifelong Sugar Land resident, Arav enjoys playing the violin, traveling, and spending time with his extended family in India. But, his journey into community service began through personal adversity.

For the first few years of his life, Arav faced significant health challenges that required extended hospital stays. During those difficult times, he and his family experienced firsthand the compassion of healthcare professionals and members of the community. Once his health improved, he knew he wanted to pay that kindness forward.

"I realized that many people had helped me and my family," Arav shared. "I wanted to do the same for others."

By the age of 12, Arav was already volunteering by performing violin concerts at senior living centers and helping assemble care packages through local churches. As his vision grew, so did his ambition. He recognized that creating lasting impact would require a larger platform, leading him to establish Gifting Kindness, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to serving children and seniors experiencing hardship.

Today, Gifting Kindness focuses not only on meeting practical needs but also on addressing something often overlooked: emotional well-being. Through celebrations featuring meals, desserts, music, and meaningful interactions, the organization strives to give children and seniors a sense of dignity, joy, and belonging.

Understanding the importance of strong leadership, Arav assembled an experienced board of directors to help guide the organization. With professionals specializing in finance, business, and marketing, the team works together to oversee operations while executing a strategic vision for long-term growth.

Like many young entrepreneurs, Arav has faced challenges along the way.

"Being a young leader sometimes means having to earn credibility," he explained. "I'm fortunate to have mentors and community leaders who guide me and help me navigate new opportunities."

Despite those obstacles, Gifting Kindness has continued to thrive. The organization has built a strong foundation, secured support from national corporate sponsors (Costco, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Frito Lay, Pepsi, Main Event, Amy’s Ice Cream, Home Depot, Target, Dhanani PEG), and established ongoing partnerships with organizations dedicated to serving children and seniors. While proud of these accomplishments, Arav remains focused on achieving the goals outlined in the organization's five-year strategic plan.

Balancing academics, nonprofit leadership, and family life requires discipline and sacrifice. There are weekends spent planning events and even family vacations postponed to fulfill commitments to the community. Still, Arav makes it a priority to spend quality time with his family several evenings each week.

For students interested in making a difference, Arav offers practical advice.

"Start by volunteering with an organization whose mission speaks to you. Find a purpose that truly motivates you, start small, ask for guidance, and stay committed. There will be challenges and rejection along the way, but your passion for serving others will keep you moving forward."

As Gifting Kindness continues to expand its outreach throughout the community, Arav hopes to deepen its impact by building new partnerships and reaching even more children and seniors in need.

Arav's story is a reminder that leadership isn't defined by age. It's defined by compassion, perseverance, and the willingness to turn personal challenges into opportunities to uplift others. Through Gifting Kindness, he is creating a legacy of service that will continue to inspire others for years to come.
